Karlsruhe (Carlsruhe)

Also known as Carlsruhe, the city is linked by canal with the nearby Rhine River.Karlsruhe is situated at the intersection of two important transport axes and is linked to the high-speed railway network ICE. The public transport system enables passengers to reach their destination in Karlsruhe in a few minutes and to get to Frankfurt International Airport within one hour.

Karlsruhe is situated in the south west German state of Baden-Wurttemberg and has a population of more than 275,000 inhabitants. Impressively, a recent EU survey ranked the top 15 high-tech regions in Europe, of these 10 were in Germany with Karlsruhe being placed second. Karlsruhe can also boast the highest density of researchers in all of Europe.

The major tourist attraction includes the former ducal palace; a fine-arts museum featuring paintings by Hans Thoma; and a botanical garden. Karlsruhe was founded in 1715 by Charles William, margrave of Baden-Durlach. In the mid-18th century the community was laid out with its streets radiating from the palace. Karlsruhe became the capital of the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806. It was severely damaged in World War II (1939-1945).

Municipal Park
Being a green city, Karlsruhe boost a splendid Municipal Park with an attractive zoo. The park is situated between the railway station and the city center. It is worth spending a day in this city just for the parks alone. Beautiful parks with old trees, well-tended lawns and borders, and the nearby forests are the few gems of the city.

Staatliche Kunsthalle
Built over the period of 1843-46, Staatliche Kunsthalle housed in a Neo-Renaissance building. The museum showcases German and Dutch painting from the 16th-19th century. Gruenewald's famous Crucifixtion (1523) is one of the high force of attraction amongst the tourists.

High court
The Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Appeal Court are also major attraction of the Karlsruhe and are well-established "residents of Karlsruhe".


Ducal Palace
Built over the period of 1749-1781, the Ducal Palace is the former residence of the Dukes of Baden The palace was reconstructed after it was being destroyed in World War II, but the original interiors were not restored. The palace now houses the excellent Badisches Landesmuseum, which houses a collection of antiquities as well as decorative arts, sculpture, porcelain, and furniture from the Middle Ages to the present day.
